Intoxicated Man Arrested After Firing Rifle in Roosevelt

A man arrested for firing shots outside a Roosevelt gas station is in Duchesne County Jail. 28-year-old Tyler Cole Butts was arrested on September 23rd for the offenses of Carrying a Dangerous Weapon Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, Intoxication, Disorderly Conduct, Use of a Firearm by a Restricted Person, and Threat of Violence. According to the Affidavit of Probable Cause, officers were dispatched on report of a gunshot fired by a male dressed in dark clothing with an assault rifle. Witnesses said the man yelled about shooting people and had last been seen around Top Stop. When officers arrived, the man was in the doorway of Top Stop with the rifle slung on his back. The man was placed under arrest and was identified as Tyler Butts. The arresting officer noted that Butts was sweating profusely, had dilated pupils, and spoke erratically. It was believed he was intoxicated and under the influence of a strong stimulant. The rifle was found to be loaded with the safety off. It had 25 rounds in the magazine with the one in the chamber. Based on witness testimony and the magazine capacity, it is believed the gun was discharged 4 to 6 times. Butts was transported to the hospital and evaluated by a Doctor who believed he was under the influence of drugs. Once given medical clearance, he was transported to the Duchesne County Jail. Butts has other charges currently filed against him in 8th District Court. This month alone those charges include Unlawful Acquisition of a Financial Card, Assault, Domestic Violence in the Presence of a Child, and Violation of a Protective Order. His initial appearance in 8th District Court on those charges is scheduled for October 25th.
