Government Students Take on Lobbyists for HB 117

A group of bright local high school students have taken up the cause of Representative Scott Chew on House Bill 117. The bill proposes to expand the type and breadth of publications that can print public notices. So how did a team of 8 Uintah High School seniors get involved? Senior government teacher Mary Mouton says it’s simple. Her students have consistently impressed Representative Chew during their visits to the Capital each year to observe the legislative process and the Representative approached Mouton on forming a team to help. “He sent me a copy of the bill and I pulled together a group of really sharp students and they are hard at work forming arguments and crafting their presentation,” says Ms. Moulton. “The kids are collecting data, have talking points and are anticipating all the arguments. Their first goal is to get the bill out of Committee.” The group is scheduled to testify before the Business and Commerce Committee on February 17th at 8am and will have more than Ms. Moulton and Representative Chew silently cheering them on. The trip is happening in conjunction with the senior government class trip to the Capital so the young team will have 30+ classmates supporting them from the audience.
