Gas prices continue to go up hitting Basin residents in the pocket book where it hurts the most.
On Wednesday night
, several gas stations in the area hit the $3.00 a gallon mark pushing prices among the highest in the nation. According to the latest report from AAA, Wednesday’s national average gas price was $2.73 and Utah’s average was $2.99. Only Hawaii and California had prices significantly higher at $3.57 and $3.55. Even the national average of $2.73 is at its most expensive point in nearly three years. The question of why gas prices are on the rise is complicated. The Energy Information Administration, however, reported this month that gasoline demand has surged to 9.86 million barrels per day, which is the highest mid-April rate on record and is the highest so far this year. Declining gas stocks combined with high demand are reportedly to blame for the rising prices.
