DWR Urges Waterfowl Hunters to Watch for Harmful Algal Blooms

The Division of Wildlife Resources is urging waterfowl hunters to watch for Harmful Algal Blooms while out hunting, including some identified in northeastern Utah. While some believe Harmful Algal Blooms only occur during hot summer weather, it is possible for them to continue to be a threat to humans and pets throughout the fall and winter. “Most active advisories will be lifted by the end of the month, and signs and website posts will be removed,” shares Kate Fickas with the Division of Water Quality. “However, it’s essential to know that these blooms can continue in colder weather. People should know what to look for, and when in doubt, keep your pets out.” There are currently 30 waterbodies still under warning advisories across the state. Calder, Matt Warner, Starvation, and Strawberry Reservoir all still have a Warning Advisory Level.  If you believe your pet may have been exposed to a Harmful Algal Bloom, seek immediate veterinary care.
