A collaboration years in the making has had positive results, shares the Division of Wildlife Resources. DWR Assistant Aquatics Manager Bryan Englebert shares that a couple of years ago, they were approached by a landowner on the upper Duchesne River, a water designated as a Blue Ribbon fishery. The landowner was struggling with the river threatening and consuming his farm field and irrigation diversion structure. Additionally, he was concerned with flooding impacts to some of his home and ranch infrastructure. A plan was made to create several instream structures to funnel the water velocity and energy in a way that solved the main issues. The entire project was accomplished without costing the landowner anything out of pocket beyond some raw materials he already had on his property, including cottonwood trees, topsoil, and rocks.
