DWR Invites Public to View the Migrating Loons

There are five loon species in the world and the second largest migrates through Utah. In spring, the common loon passes through Utah as it heads north to summer breeding grounds. While there is no formal viewing event, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources invites the public to see loons migrating through the state by visiting several reservoirs in northeastern Utah. Utah Division of Wildlife Resources Northeastern Regional Outreach Manager Tonya Kieffer-Selby says, “This time of year, they start to show up on Big Sand Wash, Flaming Gorge, Steinaker and Red Fleet reservoirs. The loons are fairly consistent. They usually arrive around April 1st or just after the ice leaves the reservoirs. In the past, biologists have reported seeing more than 200 loons on different reservoirs in the Uinta Basin on a single day. Steinaker Reservoir seems to be one of their hotspots.”
