DWR: Don’t Wait, Take Hunter Education Course Now

If you haven’t completed your Hunter Education course but want to hunt this fall, the Division of Wildlife Services recommends getting it done. Some of the state’s hunts are starting soon including five upland game hunts that start on September 1st. To hunt in Utah, everyone born after December 31st, 1965 must complete the state’s Hunter Education course or participate in the Trial Hunting program. The Hunter Education course can be completed in one of two ways, online or by attending the course in a classroom setting. Those that choose the online route must also attend a field day at a shooting range that lasts about 5 hours. The field day tests on the instructions received online and covers how to handle and shoot a firearm safely. It also includes shooting a small-caliber rifle on the shooting range. The classroom route usually meets two nights a week for two to three weeks as well as meeting at the shooting range to demonstrate ability. If you hope to be on the field on September 1st, taking the course online is likely the best option. For more information on all options, visit
