Duchesne County Commissioners have expressed their opposition to the Forest Service’s proposal for the old Stockmore Ranger Station located south of Highway 35. The Roosevelt/Duchesne Ranger District of the Ashley National Forest announced their proposal to convey portions of the Stockmore administrative site to the federal government’s General Services Administration as excess property with the expectation that it would then be transferred to the Bureau of Indian Affairs for the Ute Indian Tribe.
Duchesne County’s response emphasized that the station is listed in the Duchesne County Resource Management Plan as a National Register of Historic Resources property and applicable policies should be followed. While the county does not object to the conveyance of Parcel 2, they do request that the Forest Service allow the Tabby Valley Parks & Recreation District to use the Stockmore property on Parcel 1 for a museum site to display antique farm equipment and historic materials. Duchesne County also suggested that if rehabilitation funding were available, the Stockmore site would make a good addition to the Forest Service cabin rental program because it is located next to the Duchesne River Blue Ribbon Fishery and recreation opportunities. Public comment is welcome during this initial scoping period of the Forest’s proposed actions.
