The 4th of July
is celebrated as the birth of our nation. Locally, the 4th also doubles as the birthday for local celebrity Dippy. For those that don’t know, Dippy represents the original fossils of the Diplodocus that is at the Utah Field House of Natural History. Dippy was discovered
on July 4th
in 1899 and is considered the most famous single dinosaur skeleton because of the number of plaster casts donated around the world by Andrew Carnegie. Andrew Carnegie’s grandson, William Thomson, has said that “Carnegie hoped to demonstrate through mutual interest in scientific discoveries that nations have more in common than what separates them. He used his gifts in an attempt to open inter state dialogue on preserving world peace – a form of Dinosaur diplomacy.” This has lead Dippy to be nicknamed as the “star-spangled dinosaur”. The Utah Field House of Natural History is throwing a party for this special patriotic fossil
