Could a dinosaur fossil recovered from the Morrison Formation in Dinosaur National Monument belong to the largest Stegosaur species ever discovered? The bones have gone unnoticed for decades but new excitement has erupted thanks to fresh eyes on the collection. Futura Sciences shares that, according to Rebecca Hunt Foster of Dinosaur National Monument, “their significance was only recognized recently during a review of museum collections. At the time of discovery, they were likely overshadowed by the many fossils of neighboring giants such as Brachiosaurus or Diplodocus. In fact, one of the bones was initially attributed to a sauropod.” The well known Stegosaurus was believed to measure up to 24 feet long and weigh about 5 tons but the assessment on these bones challenges that benchmark.
