A stage production that won 5 Tony Awards, including Best Book of a Musical, is coming to the Uintah Basin for the first time! Uintah Theater’s production of ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ opens tomorrow on the Uintah High School auditorium stage. Director Chris Piner says this is one he has wanted to direct for a very long time, ever since he saw it shortly after its success at the 2006 Tony Awards. He describes it as “a hilarious love letter to musical theatre that celebrates all the wonderful absurdities of Broadway.” This production has 26 students involved, including 19 cast members and 7 crew members. Piner’s advice to audiences is to be prepared to laugh. “This show is genuinely funny,” says Piner. “It doesn’t pretend to be some deep, thought-provoking piece of theatre, although there are certainly moments of real humanity that may touch audience members in unexpected ways. But above all, it’s just pure fun. Sometimes that’s exactly what we need: an evening to escape the world for a little while, laugh together, and enjoy the magic of live theatre.” ‘The Drowsy Chaperone’ runs select nights from October 23rd through the 30th.
