The Colowyo Mine in Moffat County will very soon officially close. According to a press release from Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Tri-State will transition to full reclamation of the Colowyo Mine, following the conclusion of coal production by the end of 2025. The Colowyo Mine was developed in 1978 and has been operated by Tri-State since 2011. Tri-State has contracted with Kiewit Mining Group for the mine reclamation phase that is scheduled to begin around January 1st, 2026. The Colowyo Mine currently employs over 120 workers whose work with Tri-State is coming to an end. Kiewit Mining Group referred to those workers in a recent press release. “We look forward to leading this effort and recognize the value the current workforce brings,” said Kiewit executive vice president Jay Johnson. “We are committed to executing the work safely and responsibly while supporting Colowyo’s skilled employees as we transition the site into its next phase.”
