KNEU 1250For those that enjoy the Flaming Gorge and want to share in the history of the area be sure to support the Sweetwater County Historical Museum with their many projects that they are involved with. The museum has teamed with the Sweetwater County Quilters Guild for the second annual quilt exhibit that is called “Many Many Quilts” and features quilts made by the guild for their miniature quilt challenge.
At the February 6th Planning Commission meeting Ken Moon and Allen Lindsay were recognized for their long time service on the Duchesne County Planning Commission. Ken Moon served on the Planning Commission from January 2011 to December 2018 as a representative of the Duchesne area as well as having served as the Chairman for two years.
The future of the Basin Transit Authority bus system in Uintah County is the topic of a public meeting scheduled for next week. Since its inception in 2012, the BTA has been funded through the Utah Department of Transportation with the Uintah Transportation Special Service District providing the local matching funds. The federal funds cover about 60 percent of the operational costs leaving the transportation district to fund approximately $190,000 each year.
Tuesday’s Vernal Chamber luncheon had attendees attention as officials shared details of the Uintah County cave rescue that took place in January 2018. Uintah County Fire Marshal Jeremy Raymond and Uintah County Search and Rescue Commander Shad Shelley shared their experience helping a group of people who became trapped inside the Little Brush Creek Cave.
Do you love learning about dinosaurs? The Friends of the Utah Field House has partnered with the Uintah County Library to start a 2019 lecture series. The lecture kicks off with Dr. John Foster. Dr. Foster is an expert on the Late Jurassic, having spent more than twenty-five years excavating fossils across the western United States.

Or if dancing to jazz music puts a shuffle in your step then plan to attend tonight’s Dinner, Dance and Concert hosted by Uintah High School Jazz Ensemble. Unfortunately if you haven’t gotten your tickets already then the dinner portion is not an option. Your attendance at the dance and concert, however, is still very welcome.

Winter ozone will likely exceed the EPA standard on Wednesday and Thursday and citizens are encouraged to take action to reduce ozone-forming emissions. “We underestimated ozone all last week,” shares Dr. Seth Lyman, Director of the USU Bingham Research Center. “Every day we predicted that on the next day the atmosphere would mix out and the basin would be clean again, and it really didn’t fully happen until Saturday.
Thankfully no injuries were reported in an accident that involved a school bus with students on board in Uintah County on Tuesday. According to the Uintah County Sheriff’s Office, a Uintah School District bus carrying seven students was struck from behind near 6200 North Dry Fork Canyon Road just before 8:00am. “The collision occurred when the bus driver pulled the bus to the right side of the road and stopped to allow vehicles following behind to pass,” shares the Sheriff’s Office.
A bill has recently passed the Senate aimed at protecting public lands and waterways that affects eastern Utah and beyond. The bill passed with a 92-8 vote. It is considered the most comprehensive conservation legislation to be passed in over a decade with over 2 million acres safeguarded. Every state in the union has lands affected including Utah.
While we probably haven’t seen the last of winter storms, Roosevelt City has asked for help preserving the streets by taking advantage of the warmer weather and snow melt. When the weather warms up and the snow begins to melt it helps if the runoff can find its way to storm drains. “The number one cause of potholes and other damage to city streets is the freeze-thaw cycle,” shares Roosevelt City.
Officials are urging locals to prepare now for the potential of spring flooding. According to Duchesne County Fire and Emergency Manager Mike Lefler, sudden warming or a rain-on-snow event could trigger floods in certain parts of the county.
