In its 31st year, the annual Josie Shoot is a .22 shooting competition for women of all ages inspired by local legend Josie Bassett Morris, a gun slinging, independent woman of the wild, wild west.
A Roosevelt man died after an accidental fall yesterday in Vernal. According to Vernal PD, Law Enforcement and Medical Personnel were dispatched to Basin Saw and Cycle in Vernal City on June 20th just before 6:00pm on a call that an individual had fallen from a ladder. “Life Saving efforts were unsuccessful and 59 year old Bruce Taylor of Roosevelt was pronounced deceased at the scene.” Evans Family Media joins Vernal PD in offering our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Taylor at this difficult time.
Thursday was a great kickoff of the John Wesley Powell River Fest set up around the Uintah County Library with music, food, inflatables, and even the chance to get on the water! People of all ages enjoyed getting on the makeshift pond next to the Scout Office, able to borrow kayaks, paddle boards, and canoes for a ride right in downtown Vernal!
It’s been an exciting week in downtown Roosevelt City with the ‘Fun on 40’ celebration. Part of the fun was welcoming people who may have traveled through Roosevelt many times but hadn’t stopped to enjoy the downtown atmosphere and businesses until now. Even more, the celebration was an opportunity for the great people and places in Roosevelt to shine, something that City Manager Ryan Snow says is natural as residents, business owners, and city officials alike are continually stepping up to beautify and invest in the City.
The Uintah County Commission adopted the tax rate for the 2019-2020 budget year during Monday’s Commission meeting. The state recommended a certified tax rate of 0.003083. “Instead of adopting the certified tax rate established by the state, the commissioners chose to retain the current tax rate, which is a lower rate of 0.002885,” shares Uintah County.
Playing softball never feels quite as good as when it is paired with a worthy cause. The Hit, Run, Score for a Cause tournament held each year in Vernal is the largest charity softball tournament in the state and it is in it’s 19th year. The registration deadline had passed but has been reopened and extended until Sunday, June 23rd, and teams are encouraged to sign up.
Locals that supported a special charity ride that made a stop in Vernal last month may be interested to learn that the cause raised a significant amount of money to benefit children with chronic illnesses. The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America announced on Tuesday that over $1.7 million dollars were raised during their 3,700 mile journey across America.
The school year might seem light-years away but TriCounty Health is encouraging the community to start making plans to get their kids back to school immunizations. “Utah State law requires vaccinations for children entering into kindergarten and seventh grade,” shares TriCounty Health.
Snowpack in the mountains is being talked about as the risk of flooding has increased but how much snow remains in the High Uintas Wilderness? As of Tuesday, June 18th, Ashley National Forest shares that “Brown Duck Basin has 35 inches of snow, Five Point Lake has 30 inches of snow and Lake Fork Basin at elevation 10,885 has 40 inches of snow.
The Division of Wildlife Resources has been busy stocking waters throughout the Uintah Basin with all kinds of fish but neighboring Strawberry Reservoir is the focus this week. DWR biologists started stocking the reservoir on Monday, taking fish out onto the reservoir in barges and releasing them throughout the lake.
The fun continues in Roosevelt this week for the ‘Fun on 40’ celebration. All are invited to a special event on Thursday, June 20th, to visit Roosevelt City’s Main Street for a celebration of local business and small-town spirit from 1 to 4pm. Evans Family Media will be broadcasting live on the radio and many Roosevelt Main Street businesses will be involved, offering prizes, sales, and incentives.
Uintah County Emergency Management shared Tuesday afternoon an updated flood warning for the Duchesne River near Randlett in Uintah County. At noon on Tuesday the river stage was 13.2 feet. Flood stage is generally considered to be at 13.3 feet. Minor flooding is forecast and property owners should prepare in whatever ways appropriate. The impact at 13.3 feet will flood fields and lowland along the river southeast of Randlett with damage possible to some private bridges and irrigation works.
