KNEU 1250May 16th through the 22nd has officially been recognized as EMS Week, a time to honor the service and dedication of the nation’s EMS providers. This year’s theme is “This is EMS: Caring For Our Communities.” Locally, Ashley Regional Medical Center held an EMS/First Responder breakfast on Tuesday while Uintah Basin Healthcare celebrated EMS Week with a Kids Fair at Constitution Park.
It was an exciting day for many as Uintah Basin Healthcare broke ground on the expansion project taking place on their Roosevelt campus. In a Monday press release, Uintah Basin Healthcare provided details on the project: “Our Roosevelt Campus expansion will include a 21,000 square foot 3-story tower to expand South from the hospital’s main entrance,” shares UBH.
The complicated work to repair Starvation Bridge continues and UDOT has shared what the public can expect this week during their travels. “Crews are making progress as they form the new updated parapet wall by pouring concrete over the exposed rebar on the eastbound side of the bridge,” shares UDOT.
Further details have been provided concerning the open Roosevelt City Council position. Roosevelt City shares that Councilman Vince Reiley and his family are moving out of Roosevelt, so his seat will be available. Reiley has approximately 2 ½ years left of his term so the Council will appoint someone to fill his seat from June to December.
It is certainly fitting with current weather conditions to highlight May as National Wildfire Prevention Awareness Month. We are already seeing elevated Fire Danger levels. Since 9 out 10 wildfires are human caused it would behoove us all to be more aware and diligent to the signs and causes.
The drought conditions throughout Utah are going to affect the state in many ways, but did you realize it would bring us into conflict with bears? According to a press release from the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources, the drought will have a big impact on plants and other root-like vegetation which is 90% of a black bear’s diet.
Roosevelt City announced Friday a vacancy on the Roosevelt City Council. “Notice is hereby given that Roosevelt City is seeking to fill one vacant City Council Member position,” shared the announcement.” This vacancy will be filled at the regularly scheduled Council Meeting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1st, at the Roosevelt City Offices, located at 255 S. State Street.

Burgess Owens introduced two pieces of legislation in Washington D.C. in response to the Biden Administration's proposal to fund education programs informed by Critical Race Theory. Ashley National Forest is advising against venturing into the high country of the Forest, including attempts at the Highline Trail or accessing lakes for recreation. “The Highline Trail in May is considered impassable, unless one has serious experience in wet snow drifts in excess of five feet deep and below-freezing conditions above treeline,” shares the Forest announcement.
USU Uintah Basin and its fellow statewide USU campuses across Utah had an edge as an education institution during the pandemic. USU shared in a press release that as a national leader in innovative online and broadcast education, USU leveraged its experience to adapt quickly and continue to serve students with relatively minimal disruption.
Uintah School District announced Thursday that they will NOT require students, employees, or visitors to its campuses to wear a mask, during the last week of school. Terra Academy and Duchesne County School District have made similar announcements following Utah Governor Spencer Cox’s announcement Thursday that the statewide mask mandate for K through 12 public schools will end on May 24th.
