KNEU 1250Community members attended the Uintah County Commission meeting on Monday concerned with the 2017 Certified Tax Rates included on the agenda. Clerk/Auditor Mike Wilkins presented a rate of .002982 which would bring in $13 million 800 thousand dollars to the county to meet the county’s obligations.
Six months ago the call was sounded: get prepared for spring flooding! Emergency management leaders throughout the Basin distributed information and local stores stocked sandbags and other resources to help citizens get prepared to protect their property. Spring came and sporadic weather kept the mountain snow from all melting at once.

Despite raging winds, no additional fire growth occurred this week on the Maeser Highway Fire. As of Monday, the fire was 90 percent contained and full containment was expected on Tuesday. Conditions in the fire area were reported to be very difficult due to wind gusts sometimes in excess of 40 miles per hour.
4H youth were all smiles over the weekend following the Uintah Basin Junior Livestock Show judged by Craig Beckmier. Grand Champion goat was awarded to Kraesin Horrocks and Reserve Champion goat was awarded to Kynlie Horrocks, both of Lapoint.
Winds in excess of 70 miles per hour pushed the Dead Dog Fire, that started 10 miles north of Rangely, to over 5000 acres on Monday. The fire had evacuated the town of Blue Mountain as well as the Deserado Mine and train loading area but both evacuation orders were lifted Monday night.
A home is a total loss after a fire in Jensen. According to Uintah County Fire Marshal Jeremy Raymond, the fire happened around 4:00pm on Saturday at approximately 4000 South 4500 East. The home is considered a total loss of approximately $100,000 dollars in damage
UBATC graduated another round of POST officers last week and the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is congratulating their six cadets. The group completed all three phases of the Peace Officer Standards and Training satellite academy.
Community members were disturbed over the weekend after a body was found on a sidewalk in Vernal early Saturday morning. According to Vernal City Assistant Police Chief Keith Campbell, investigators are still trying to figure out cause and manner of death. The deceased was a 34-year-old male found outside his parents home.
A Denver man died Saturday while on a multi-day commercial river trip in Dinosaur National Monument. According to a park service news release, just before 3:00pm on Saturday, monument staff received a call that CPR was in progress on a client with Sheri Griffith Expeditions.
