‘Be Safe, Be Seen on Halloween’

Halloween activities are starting up and officials are asking that you make safety a top priority. The Department of Public Safety is offering the following tips: Walk Safely! Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks. Put electronic devices down and keep your head up while walking. Always walk on sidewalks or paths. Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach kids to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars. When it comes to costumes it’s great to be creative as well as safe. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and choose light colors as much as possible. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers. When selecting a costume make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Specifically for those on the roads: Slow down and be especially alert in neighborhoods. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alley ways slowly and carefully. Eliminate any distractions in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive slowly! Remember popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 to 9:30 so be especially alert.
