Ashley Elementary participated again this year in ‘Ruby Bridges Walk To School Day’. On November 14th, 1960, Ruby Bridges was the first African American child to attend an all-white elementary school during the New Orleans de-segregation crisis. Ashley Elementary teacher Katie Flaniken took the initiative three years ago for the school to participate in the event along with other schools all around the country. “She had to walk to school every day escorted by four armed marshals to ensure her safety,” shared Flaniken. “Because of her bravery, students all over the U.S. can get an education no matter their race. That definitely seems like something worth celebrating!” The students learned about Ruby Bridges’ story and were invited to take a short walk down the sidewalk before heading to class to remember the inspiring walk of Ruby Bridges.
