Many people in the Uintah Basin love to have a White Christmas. Are you aware that there is a scientific definition for a white Christmas? According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a “white Christmas” is defined as having one inch or more of snow on the ground Christmas morning. Sadly, only a dozen states have more than a 70% chance of starting their day with a fresh blanket of fluffy snow. Many locations might already have snow, but it doesn’t count if it fell days prior. That established, NOAA gathered statistical data that was compiled from the averages of several climatological measurements between 1981 and 2010. While the Basin is in an area for the best odds, it cannot hold a candle to Aspen, Colorado which is one of about a dozen locations that can claim a 100% historical probability for a white Christmas. Let’s hope the odds are in our favor and we can enjoy a white Christmas.
