Representative Chew Explains Representation Risk With Redistricting

The redistricting process is well underway in Utah and citizens in the Uintah Basin are urged to get involved and advocate for rural Utah to have a voice. The process of redistricting starts with the U.S.Census data which is then taken by the Legislative Redistricting Committee who travels the state holding public hearings, gathering public input, and reviewing map suggestions. That process began in the summer and is nearing the end of the time for public hearings with Vernal’s scheduled for this Friday. Local leaders are among those educating the public on the importance of getting involved and what is at stake. Representative Scott Chew explains, “We have been lucky over the last several years to have individuals from the Uintah Basin serve in both the House and Senate from the Uintah Basin. Redistricting could make local representation much more challenging if certain legislators have their way.” The Legislative Redistricting Committee is holding the public hearing in Vernal this Friday at the Uintah Conference Center at 10am in the Flaming Gorge Ballroom. All are encouraged to attend. A state-of-the-art map drawing tool is also available for the public to submit their own map.
