If you’d like some help spotting a Sandhill Crane an upcoming event will do just that. Cranes are among the oldest living birds on the planet with the earliest Sandhill Crane fossil being estimated at 2.5 million years old. Sandhill Cranes mate for life and make a nest that can be 40 inches across and six inches high. These beautiful birds will be migrate through the Uintah Basin. State and federal organizations are hosting a Sandhill Crane Viewing Day. Being held Saturday, October 2nd, there will be two separate opportunities to view them. From 7am to 9am a group will meet at Jensen Park then travel to fields near the Green River near Jensen, Utah. The second chance will be at 5pm to 7pm at the Ouray National Wildlife Refuge and Pelican Lake. People are being asked to meet at the commuter parking lot at the intersection of Highway 40 and State Route 88. This outing is free and for the whole family.
