This weekend is the perfect opportunity to get a close look at a beautifully odd landmark. People from all over the world with an interest in acoustics have found themselves in Rangely, Colorado of all places to check out a 7-story steel water tank that is now used solely for its amazing acoustics. Originally built in 1940 as a railroad water-treatment facility, The TANK was relocated to Rangely in the 1960s. Its foundation could not support the weight of it when filled so it remained empty but with a bowed floor due to the insufficient foundation. The result was literal music to the ears, with up to 40 seconds of reverberation. Now The TANK is a ‘Center for Sonic Arts’ and a location for concerts, professional and amateur recordings, and tours. This weekend The TANK is having an open house as part of the annual SeptemberFest that is also celebrating the 75th anniversary of Rangely’s incorporation.
