Homeless Shelter Plans On Hold in Moffat County

Moffat County Commissioners are stopping plans to turn the old Furniture Galley into a homeless shelter after learning the funding from the CARES Act limits their control over the shelter. According to a report in the Craig Press, the Commissioners met Tuesday and approved sending a letter regarding their concerns. The letter reads in part: “Our letter of support for this grant was premised on the idea that the funding was to help local Moffat County residents who were struggling with homelessness. In our meeting with you, you never discussed even the possibility of a regional homeless shelter to be located in Craig. Our support for the grant was based on your representation that this funding was to help homeless people in Moffat County…We are totally opposed to bringing homeless people into Moffat County who do not already reside here.” It is not yet clear what other funding sources may be available as an alternative for the project.
