It has been 10 years and every year during the first week in August, locals take time to remember a Marine from the Uintah Basin. On August 5th, 2011, Sgt. Daniel Gurr was fatally shot while on patrol in Afghanistan. While honored as a fallen soldier, it is easy for many in the community to still recall Daniel as the captain of the Uintah High School soccer team known for his enthusiasm for life and broad smile. In the last decade, many ceremonies and acts of service have been held in remembrance of Daniel and as his memory continues to burn bright there will surely be many more. This year, Daniel’s mother Tracy has shared that some of Sgt. Gurr’s friends will be coming to Vernal for the weekend in memory of Daniel and they will be having a special ceremony for anyone that would like to join in. At 8am on Saturday, August 7th, the plan is to walk from the helicopter at the Uintah County building to the Vernal Cemetery. Time will be taken to share stories about Daniel and all are invited.
