“Past these mural curves, we glide hour after hour, stopping now and then, as our attention is arrested by some new wonder…” These words from the journal of Major John Wesley Powell were recorded almost exactly 152 years ago during his epic 1,000 mile journey down the Green and Colorado Rivers. Powell’s scientific expedition to survey land and resources is the focus of several celebrations including the John Wesley Powell River Fest coming up July 29th, 30th, and 31st in the park in front of the Uintah County Library. Among the favorite festivities of the River Fest in Vernal is the Paddle Pond set up next to the Scout office each year. Those able to volunteer with the Paddle Pond are asked to contact the Vernal Chamber office at 435-789-1352. The festival also includes a corn hole tournament, Art in the Park, the River Guide Cook Off, and three days of fantastic music. Visit PowellRiverFest.com for more information.
