A rare opportunity is coming for animal lovers. A hummingbird banding event is taking place at the Red Canyon Lodge in Daggett County. “At this location, we’re hoping to see and band rufous hummingbirds as they are migrating through Utah during their July migration from Canada and Alaska,” explains DWR Recreation Specialist Anthony Christianson. “Rufous hummingbirds can be found at these higher elevations and are some of the easiest to identify. They have a bright copper/orange color to them and can be found aggressively fighting over nectar resources, like Indian paintbrush and other local flowers. We’ll likely capture some broad-tailed and black-chinned hummingbirds during the event.” BLM Biologist Terry Tolbert will present the demonstration on Saturday, July 31st from 7am to 11am. The event is free but it is asked that you go to eventbrite.com to sign up in advance as space is limited.
