A recent state operation involving local law enforcement officers is about keeping children safe. Operation Reboot conducted door to door sex offender compliance checks with the goal to check 1,000 of the 8,000 registered sex offenders in the state. Vernal Police and Uintah County Sheriff’s Office were among the 11 agencies that hit the street to perform the checks in their communities. “Before COVID-19, kids had School Resource Officers, teachers, counselors, and friends to lean on if abuse was occurring in the home,” shares Uintah County Sheriff Steve Labrum. “In our current times, some kids are being exposed to unsupervised sex offenders. The purpose of the checks the US Marshals and local law enforcement are conducting is to make sure sex offenders are living up to the requirements the court has mandated. The whole objective of the visits is to keep our children safe.” The Operation officially ended on August 14th but officers plan to continue in order to reach their goal of making at least 1,000 checks.
