Yesterday, Uintah County Library Director Sam Passey presented to the Uintah County Commission the Library Board’s recommendation to stop charging overdue/late fees. One of the reasons shared for the recommendation is that the cost of collecting, receipting and depositing is more then what is collected. In 2018, the Uintah County Library collected $2,717 dollars in overdue fees. A couple other reasons is that the board believes that the fees deter people from checking out items and the overdue fee doesn’t actually help people to return items in a timely manner. The Uintah County Commission accepted the recommendation. The library will soon share the “full information on the timing of this change.” To help clear current fines, there will be another Food 4 Fines program starting soon. A few key points to remember is that individuals are still responsible for items and will be subject to paying for materials that are lost or damaged. Also for people with overdue items their accounts will be blocked until the items are return.
