The Rifle Police Department confirmed that an officer involved shooting took place on Monday. According to the Rifle PD news release, an officer made a vehicle stop on the evening of August 5th on the Colorado River bridge between the I-70 exit and Whiteriver Avenue. “Two officers made contact with the subject which unfortunately led to shots being fired. A weapon not belonging to the officers was found at the scene,” Rifle PD explains. “The subject was transported by ambulance to the hospital by Colorado River Fire Rescue.” No officers were injured in the incident and the bridge will remain closed until the field investigation is complete. Rifle PD reports that the Critical Incident Team has responded to take over the investigation. Both officers are on administrative leave, per policy, and the Rifle Police Department will conduct an administrative review of the incident.
