It’s been a year since the fatal Green River Tunnel accident and fire on I-80. While the major restoration on the westbound I-80 tunnel is complete, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has announced that more work will resume on the tunnel this spring. Multiple fatalities took place during the February 2025 tragedy at milepost 90.2 inside the westbound Green River Tunnel in southwestern Wyoming. 26 vehicles were involved in the crash, including 10 passenger vehicles and 16 commercial vehicles. 6 of the commercial vehicles and 2 of the passenger vehicles were completely destroyed by the fire. 3 people were killed and at least 5 people were reported as seriously injured in the accident. Work this spring will include the installation of the westbound tunnel’s lighting system. The eastbound tunnel will be converted to handle both directions of traffic during construction. Travelers should plan for some delays. The work is anticipated to be complete ahead of Green River’s Flaming Gorge Days in June.
