Animal Cruelty Case Of Alleged Wolf Torturer May Go To Trial

A Green River, Wyoming judge indicated that the felony animal cruelty case against 44-year-old Cody Roberts could go to trial, reports Cowboy State Daily. Roberts allegedly ran over a wolf with a snowmobile in February 2024 and then brought it to a Wyoming bar muzzled and injured before eventually killing the animal. Roberts’ attorney argues that the exceptions to Wyoming’s animal cruelty statute should count in this case but the judge said on Wednesday in court that he intends to let the case see a jury and the trial would be scheduled for March. If the case goes to trial, Roberts’ lawyer argued that it would affect Wyoming laws allowing hunting sports that cause an animal to suffer, such as trapping and bow hunting. The prosecution disagreed, emphasizing that a person lawfully hunting is not defined as torture or torment because the intent is not there.
