A Veteran who is a Ute Tribe member was among those honored this year during the University of Utah’s 28th annual Veterans Day Commemoration Ceremony. The ceremony took place on Friday with Ferron Secakuku one among just 12 Utah Veterans recognized for their service. The event began with a bagpipe procession followed by a cannon blast at 11am to mark the 107th anniversary of the Armistice signing that ended World War I and then the ceremony followed. Ferron Secakuku was drafted at age 19 for the Vietnam War and joined the US Army. He served as a “point man” in the Regiment known as the “Wolfhounds” and received an Army Commendation Medal with a “V” Device for Valor for bravery shown. Later assigned to the 25th Infantry Division, Secakuku earned an Air Medal for his leadership and courage during air operations in combat zones. More about his service can be found on veterans.utah.edu. The Ute Bulletin shared that Ute Tribal Veteran Ferron Secakuku’s recognition during Friday’s ceremony is significant as the last time a Native American Utah Veteran was honored at this event was in 1991.
