Highway 40 through Vernal stays busy with not only local traffic but also large semis and heavy equipment. With an increase in noise violations, Vernal Police have been instructed to focus on enforcement. Vernal Police Chief Gledhill shared with Evans Family Media that they are once again focusing on enforcing the ban on Jake Brakes within Vernal City. While ‘Jake Brake’ is the common term, it is referring to heavy duty vehicles like commercial trucks and semis slowing down using the engine’s own compression and as a result making a loud, disruptive noise. “We have noticed an increase in these and other equipment violations,” says Chief Gledhill, “so we’ve instructed our officers to be proactive with enforcement. For a couple years it was a big problem and we did a good job of dealing with it but it’s become a problem again. We don’t want those loud vehicles disturbing businesses and causing safety concerns.”
