The Duchesne County Fire Department safety messages take on many forms. This week’s message focuses on protecting kids in and around school buses as school gets back underway. Drivers: Stop for the bus every time! The basic steps for road users state that all road users, including vehicles, bicycles, motorcycles, and ebikes are legally required to follow the rules when a bus stops. Yellow flashing lights at the top, front, or back of the school bus mean the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Drivers near the bus should slow down and prepare to stop. Red flashing lights at the top, front, or back of the bus, as well as on the extended Stop arm, mean the bus has stopped and the children are getting on or off. Drivers MUST STOP and WAIT until the red lights stop flashing and the extended stop arms are withdrawn. Then proceed slowly, keeping an eye for children in the area. By understanding the rules and recognizing the risks, we can all play a part in keeping kids safe.
