Uintah School District has announced that starting this school year, students won’t be allowed to use their phones, smartwatches, or similar tech during class time, in compliance with Utah law and a new Uintah School District policy. In Uintah School District Elementary Schools: there will be NO use of phones, smartwatches, or similar tech allowed during instructional time. Devices must be set to silent/off and out of sight. Smartwatches can only be used to tell time or track steps. No tapping, texting, or app use will be allowed. Recess and lunch rules will vary by school. In Uintah School District Secondary Schools: phones, smartwatches, or similar tech may be used before and after school, during passing time, and during lunch. No devices can be seen, heard, or used during instructional time. Phones must be off or in airplane mode and out of sight. If you need to leave class, the phone can be exchanged for a hall pass. If a device is seen or heard during class, the student must place it in a device locker. The student retains the key and can get the device back after class. Refusing to put the device in a device locker will result in a referral to school administration and possible discipline. A device-use plan may also be developed with school staff and parents/guardians. Schools will provide more information to students and their guardians at the start of the new school year.
