A vehicle fire on Highway 40 near Dinosaur, Colorado on Sunday afternoon caused a wildfire, prompting the temporary closure of Highway 40 from milepost 3 to milepost 11. By 5:30pm, Highway 40 reopened with traffic alternating directions as wildland firefighters remained in the area to continue fighting the Spencer Fire. An update on the Spencer Fire had not been provided as of early Monday morning. Red flag warnings have been issued in this area. In fact, Dinosaur National Monument has shared warnings with the public of the dangers. “Due to extreme drought and other factors, there is a very high fire danger potential,” shares the announcement. “As a reminder, visitors must be vigilant and do all they can to prevent human caused wildfires. This includes avoiding any activities that involve fire or sparks when it’s hot, dry and windy. Keep all vehicles off dry grass. Check your trailers and chains to be certain they are not dragging. Remember fireworks are illegal on federal lands. Please do your part to prevent causing wildfires this summer! Fire officials are encouraging the public to use extreme caution and be responsible when outdoors.”
