A road rage incident covering over 5 miles and involving two vehicles in Duchesne County on Highway 40 ended in the arrest of both drivers on Monday. According to the Utah Highway Patrol booking affidavit, the trooper observed a white truck traveling in one lane and a blue SUV passing the truck in the turning lane at a high rate of speed, almost striking the truck near mile marker 111 on Highway 40. The trooper initiated a traffic stop and both vehicles pulled over. A second trooper arrived on scene. The driver of the blue SUV stated that he had passed the white truck and then the white truck hit his vehicle from behind while in Myton and then he said he pulled over when the trooper initiated the stop. “Considering they had traveled approximately 5 miles from where the accident originally occurred and the aggressive driving behavior I witnessed, I believed there were parts of the story he was purposefully omitting,” stated the trooper in the affidavit. Next, the driver of the white truck was asked what had happened and the driver and passenger of the truck stated that they were traveling eastbound on Highway 40 when the blue Subaru passed them on a double yellow line and then cut them off. The driver of the truck then stated that he passed the Subaru near Myton and once in Myton, the Subaru passed the truck again in a no passing zone and brake checked the truck twice and the truck struck the rear of the Subaru twice before both drivers stopped. The driver of the Subaru then exited his vehicle, walked back toward the truck and the driver of the truck pulled in front of the Subaru and the owner of the Subaru got back in his vehicle and struck the rear of the truck. A witness spoke with the Highway Patrol trooper stating that she had seen the entire encounter from her home in Myton. She stated that she saw the white truck strike the blue SUV in the back. Both vehicles stopped on the side of the road. The driver of the blue Subaru got out and walked back toward the white truck. The truck sped past the man, almost hitting him, and then pulled in front of the Subaru and backed into the front of the Subaru before speeding off. The driver of the Subaru then returned to his vehicle and sped off after the truck. The Troopers concluded that both parties were driving recklessly, driving while road raging, and had created a substantial risk of injury to both parties as well as the public. Both men, 77-year-old Patrick Shea and 28-year-old Gregory Budshun, were arrested and booked into Duchesne County Jail.
