A referendum seeking to put a law passed during the 2025 Utah legislative session to a vote of the people has met requirements and will be on the 2025 election ballot. Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson announced over the weekend the official results of the signature gathering process for HB 267 Public Sector Labor Union Amendments Act. County clerks across the state have processed the submitted signatures and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor has certified the final count which exceeded 8 percent of active voters in the state and met that threshold in at least 15 of the 29 Senate districts. Utah Legislature passed HB 267 in February 2025. Major pushback to the bill came from public educators, police officers, firefighters, nurses, and more. Their pushback focused on the verbiage that states that the bill prohibits public employers from recognizing a labor organization as a bargaining agent for public employees and excludes new labor organization employees from participating in the Utah Retirement Systems. Utah voters will now decide if HB 267 is approved or rejected.
