Annual training for the Duchesne County Search and Rescue team was timely last week considering the heavy mountain snow and warming temperatures this week. The team held avalanche training on February 4th at Moon Ranch in the Wolf Creek area. According to the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office, an avalanche beacon/transceiver was buried under several feet of snow and search and rescue members used personal beacon/transceivers in addition to avalanche probing equipment in order to locate the buried piece of equipment. The danger of avalanche is increased by the amount of snowmobilers intent on exploring steep back country terrain. Some tips offered by the search and rescue team for snowmobilers are to check avalanche conditions and the weather forecast, know your route, make a plan, pack for an avalanche emergency and dress for the weather.
