A much anticipated road improvement project is making progress. According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the construction phase of the US-191 Realignment Construction north of Vernal got underway in April and is scheduled to run through this fall. An important part of this project was the Deep Dynamic Compaction and Earthwork that took place in 2024. Now with the contractor at work, the 2.6 mile switchback portion of the highway located 12 miles north of Vernal is scheduled to be replaced with the new alignment with fewer turns and standard horizontal curves by this fall. The new alignment will add a continuous uphill climbing lane and a downhill passing lane to allow traffic to pass slower traffic safely. An emergency truck ramp is being added and improved access to the scenic overlook to allow travelers the chance to pause and enjoy the beauty of the Uintah Basin. Once construction is complete in the fall, the switchbacks will be removed and the ground restored.
