A garbage truck making the rounds in Craig had a scare this week when fire was discovered coming from the waste in the back. Craig Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire, making a mighty mess in the process as trash was dumped out and sprayed down. Investigators believe that the fire was caused by ashes from a fireplace that had been placed in the trash for pickup that day. Extra caution should always be used when cleaning a wood stove and disposing of ashes and ashes should never be placed in the garbage cans. The potential danger is that debris could be reignited if contact is made with the ash or if oxygen is available. Even ash that appears completely cooled carries a risk of starting a fire. It took the Craig Fire Department crew over an hour to fully extinguish the fire. Contact your City or trash service to know the recommended ways of disposing of ash in your area.
