The work of local high school students on House Bill 117 has paid off as the bill is now through the House and Senate and will make its way to the Governor’s desk this spring. Representative Scott Chew brought a team of bright students on board for House Bill 117 that updates and amends the statute dealing with legal notices. The students conducted a survey, performed research, prepared a presentation and rebuttal arguments, and testified before the Business and Labor Committee. In February, the bill was passed out of the House Committee unanimously. This month, the bill passed the House floor and was put on the schedule for the Senate Committee where it bounced around for a few days until being sent on and then passed by the Senate floor this week. “This is a good thing that will benefit rural Utah,” shares Representative Chew. “This makes public notices more available to the citizens that continue to rely on print media, providing just another arena for those notices to be available.” Representative Chew said the students impressed many people during legislation and the request has been made that they be present during the ceremonial signing of the bill by Governor Herbert.
