The Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office is warning Basin citizens to be on alert for scammers, especially IRS scammers. “Our office has taken numerous complaints regarding these scams where con artists call pretending to be with the IRS,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “The callers may demand money or may say you have a refund due and try to trick you into sharing private information. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They may know a lot about you and usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling.” A few things that scammers do but the IRS will never do include calling to demand immediate payment, demand that you pay taxes without an opportunity to appeal the amount, require a specific payment method, ask for credit or debit cards over the phone, and they often threaten arrest.
