An oil spill in the Rangely area is still being cleaned up 10 days later. According to the Rio Blanco County Sheriff’s Office, Chevron Pipe Line Company responded to a crude oil release at a collection station on the Rangely Gathering System on March 5th. “The company shut down the line and dispatched personnel to contain and recover the oil and initiate cleanup activities,” shares the Sheriff’s Office. “Crews are continuing to recover the oil and clean impacted areas. The volume released from the line totals 115 barrels of crude oil into a dry drainage ditch. The oil was contained in a siphon dam…There was no impact to water. Boom and absorbent material are being used to collect and gather the oil.” Two live mallards were killed as a result of the spill as well as other small birds and mice found during the recovery operation. No public health concerns have been noted and Chevron is continuing to investigate the cause of the spill.
