Turkey Hunt Coming Up

Plenty of permits are still available for the turkey hunt in May. According to Jason Robinson, upland game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, the general statewide hunt provides several advantages. First there are more days to hunt as it runs the entire month of May versus the limited entry hunt which runs for only three weeks. There is better access because weather is typically milder in May so roads are drier and there is less snow. Third is that turkeys are still gobbling in May which is important to the hunt. “When the birds are gobbling, male turkeys, called jakes and toms, are much more receptive to calling,” shares Robinson. “The chance a turkey will respond to your call and come in for a closer look goes way up if the birds are already active and gobbling to each other.” For more information on the turkey hunt, visit
