The Uintah County Commission adopted a resolution this week to form a Recycling Market Development Zone. The zone utilizes a program through the Governor’s Office of Economic Development that offers recycling tax credits to industrial and commercial businesses that choose to adopt certain recycling processes. According to Uintah County Economic Development Director Sylvia Wilkins, those in the zone are eligible for Utah state income tax credits in the form of a 5% income tax credit on cost of machinery and equipment and $2000 dollars towards eligible operating systems. Commissioner Duane Shepherd asked for more details to ensure that businesses were not being required to adopt recycling processes. Commissioner Bill Stringer explained that the program is a benefit not a detriment to the business as it offers incentives but no penalties. The Commission unanimously approved the Recycling Market Development Zone. Wilkins said the program doesn’t cost anything to participate and is a win-win.
