United States Marshals have been involved with Sweetwater County detectives in conducting a wide sweep of registered sex offenders over the last week to ensure of compliance. As a result, a felony arrest warrant has been issued for 58-year-old Bruce Leon Harms for failure to register, which is something Harms was convicted of as recently as 2013. Sweetwater Now reports that it is believed Harms has now left the area and community members throughout the region are being asked to help locate him. Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell reports that the compliance checks are part of an ongoing campaign called Operation Jessica named after a 9-year-old girl who was abducted, raped and murdered in 2005 by a convicted sex offender who lived near her. The United States Department of Justice maintains the sex offender registry at www.nsopr.gov. Offenders are required to stay in compliance based on their state’s laws. Those with information on the location of Bruce Harms are asked to contact the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office.
