The Dead Dog Fire in western Colorado is slowly gaining containment. An update on Thursday reports that the fire is 60 percent contained and remains at 17,731 acres in size. 88.4 percent of the Dead Dog Fire is on BLM lands, 7.2 percent is on private lands in Rio Blanco County, 3.2 percent is on state lands, and 1.2 percent is on private lands in Moffat County. The Hunter Fire was 100 percent contained on Wednesday night. With increased containment on both fires, resources are being released as other fires in the region are in need. Rio Blanco County Road 1 and Moffat County Road 134 on the west side of the fire are now open. Fire safety is being urged throughout the region. Wildfire safety is contingent on weather and fuel conditions. The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team Black is reminding the public that while crews have made excellent progress on the fires, the potential for further activity remains high. Please be cautious with all combustible materials to prevent unwanted, human-caused fires.
