When Lacey Phillips got a look at her son’s carpentry project at UBATC she was immediately interested. Dakota Smuin was taking a Carpentry class from instructor Trent Tomlinson and was among the first of the Uintah High School students to work on the hunting cabin project. When Phillips and Bruce Christofferson got their first look at the cabin it had only been framed but they talked about purchasing it to put on land they own on Diamond Mountain. “There were other people interested in it, so we wanted to hurry and make the commitment and lock it in,” shared Phillips. The cabin is about 288 square feet with twin bunk beds, a full-size bed mounted above a couch which pulls out to a queen size bed. It also has a kitchenette area, full-size refrigerator, stove, mud room, and full bath. When they saw the complete project, the pair were more than pleased. Dakota worked on the project during his freshman and sophomore years, working on the wiring, woodwork, flooring and bunk beds. “This has been a really great project where the students were able to receive hands-on training,” shares Tomlinson. The cabin sold for $38,000 dollars not including appliances and the entire amount went back into the Carpentry program to be used on materials for the next construction project.
