In its fourth year, Utah’s Waterfowl Slam program is bigger and better than ever. Utah is offering nine waterfowl slams, or challenges, and each time one is completed, the hunter receives a colorful leg band that can be placed on a call lanyard as a collectable. Most of the slams focus on taking male ducks, called drakes, within a certain time frame. A waterfowl slam membership costs $20 for hunters 18 and over and $10 for hunters 17 and younger. “What’s neat about the program is that for every dollar a hunter pays to join, the federal government gives us three dollars in return,” shares DWR bird coordinator Blair Stringham. “For example, if you’re an adult and you pay the $20 fee to join the program…you’re actually providing $80 for on-the-ground work that helps waterfowl and other wildlife.” To learn more about the waterfowl slam program, visit
